A self-guided version of a 5-day North Macedonia wine tour (originally a guided trip departing 26 May 2026). The focus is Povardarie — the Vardar river valley — and its sub-zones Stobi, Negotino, Kavadarci and Skopje, which together make ~85% of the country's wine. Native Temjanika and Smederevka (white) and Vranec and Kratošija (red) grow alongside global varieties and even rare Grenache Blanc.

The route, day by day
Day 1 — Tue · Ljubljana → Skopje → Stobi → Negotino
Fly LJU → SKP (~1 h 35), pick up the car, head ~1 h south into the Stobi sub-zone.
A boutique estate by young-but-experienced Lazar Ristov; close ties to nature in wine and food, 75% sparkling and white. Tasting over dinner at the on-site restaurant.
Short drive to Negotino; hotel (base for 2 nights); overnight.
Day 2 — Wed · Negotino & Pepelište — Popov, Bovin, Dane Hermes
A tight cluster of three estates around Negotino — easy distances.
Family estate under winemaker Vlatko Ancev; a small, focused, award-winning range blending local tradition and modern technique.
North Macedonia's first privately built winery (1998); 60 ha in one of the country's driest zones.
A striking newer estate (2023) by Dane Jovanov-Hermes in rolling vineyard country, with one of the prettiest tasting halls in the country.
Early evening back to the Negotino hotel; overnight.
Day 3 — Thu · Negotino → Kavadarci → Skopje — Popovi, Tikveš, Chateau Kamnik
A tiny family cellar (2018, Goce & Vesna Popov) with higher-elevation vineyards (~450 m+) for a fresher expression; ~4,000 bottles a year.
Founded 1885, the oldest and largest in SE Europe (~15M bottles/yr). Walk the underground galleries; lunch with wines in the in-cellar restaurant.
The country's most luxurious winery, a large complex among 15 ha of vineyards on a hill at the city's edge, with views over Skopje (typically 5 wines + cheese).
Into central Skopje; hotel (base for 2 nights); overnight.
Day 4 — Fri · Skopje city & Brzanov
Morning city tour with a local guide — Skopje's radical post-independence transformation (Stone Bridge, Old Bazaar, Kale fortress, the statues).
Antonio Brzanov, a hedonist-winemaker and the country's first officially registered winery; an intimate, artisan visit around his celebrated Vranec range, with a generous spread of food.
Back to the hotel, free time, then dinner with wines at a well-known traditional Skopje restaurant; overnight.
Day 5 — Sat · Skopje → Ljubljana
Return the car at the airport and fly SKP → LJU (late morning, ~1 h 30).

Practical notes
- Appointments: message each small estate ahead with dates, group size and language; owners often host personally and lay on food.
- Sequencing: south to the Tikveš heartland, then back up to Skopje — minimal backtracking. Keep the order even if you swap a cellar.
- Driving & tasting: low blood-alcohol limit — spit if you drive, or hire a driver (cheap here).
- Entry: an EU/Slovenian ID card suffices; bring a passport as backup.
- Buying wine: estates sell on the spot at low prices; check your EU duty-free allowance bringing bottles back.
- This plan re-frames a guided tour. Cellars, prices and hours change — confirm everything directly before you travel.
