A self-guided rebuild of a Slovenian guided tour through northern Portugal. The Douro is the world's oldest demarcated wine region (1756), a UNESCO landscape of stone-walled terraces where port is grown; Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, is where it ages. This plan does both in the right order — the valley first by rental car, then the car goes back and the city happens on foot — with a Vinho Verde palate-reset in between. Fly in Tuesday, fly out Saturday.

At a glance. Region: Douro Valley, Vinho Verde & Porto · Length: 5 days / 4 nights (2 valley + 2 city) · Bases: quinta hotel near Pinhão, then central Porto · Best season: Apr–Jun or Sep–Oct harvest · Transport: fly Ljubljana → Porto (1 connection) + rental car days 1–3 only · 6 tastings + 1-h rabelo cruise. Est. total ≈ €950–1,650pp, two sharing, incl. flights.
Read this first — the car and the bookings. Rent the car for days 1–3 only: pick up at Porto airport, drop it in the city when you arrive — Porto and Gaia are entirely walkable and parking is misery. Every Douro quinta is appointment-only: book Nápoles, Wine & Soul and Bomfim 2–4 weeks ahead (more for harvest). And the Douro's roads are narrow and winding with tastings on every driving day — spit (normal and expected), share the wheel, or taxi the short Pinhão-area hops.

Before you go

What it costs

Estimate per person, assuming two sharing rooms and the rental car. Flight prices swing hardest — treat as a planning range, not a quote. Excludes port to take home (budget €40–300+; vintage port ships well).

How it compares. The guided original costs €2,200–2,400 pp (plus €20 fee) including flights, coach, sommelier guide, hotels, six tastings and most meals. Self-guided plausibly saves €700–1,200 pp — you trade the sommelier, the coach and the pre-arranged Douro logistics for flexibility and the driving. Solo travellers pay notably more (single rooms + whole car).

The route, day by day

Day 1 — Fly to Porto → up the valley to Niepoort country

Early flight, midday landing, then straight up the valley — the trip starts where the wine is grown.

Fly Ljubljana → Porto; collect the rental car

One connection; land around midday. The A4 motorway runs from the airport toward the valley.

Drive → Peso da Régua (~1 h 15 / 110 km) · lunch by the river

Régua is the working capital of the port trade — river quays, the valley railway, the Casa do Douro. A tasca lunch; confirm locally.

Quinta de Nápoles — Niepoort (~25 min, above the Tedo river)

Cellar tour and tasting at the striking modern winery of the Niepoort family — port and Douro-wine innovators since 1842. Reservation required.

Check in — quinta hotel near Pinhão (~30–40 min)

Sleep among the terraces; dinner at the estate or in Pinhão village.

Day 2 — Pinhão: boutique wines, the river, a Symington classic

Everything today sits within ~10 minutes of Pinhão — taste freely, drive barely. Bomfim is walkable from the village.

Wine & Soul (Vale de Mendiz, ~10 min)

The boutique cellar of Jorge Serôdio Borges and Sandra Tavares da Silva — Pintas, Guru and old-vine ports made in a tiny 1880s lagar house. Book via their wine-tourism page.

Rabelo boat cruise from Pinhão quay (1 h)

The traditional flat-bottomed port boats sail upstream under the Eiffel-style bridge, past the terraced amphitheatres of Bomfim, Carvalhas and Roncão. Hourly departures; book the day before.

Lunch in Pinhão · azulejo railway station

A Douro white with lunch, and the famous tiled station panels on the way through the village.

Quinta do Bomfim — Symington / Dow's (walk from the village)

Five generations of the Symington family. Old lodge, vineyard walk, then Dow's ports on the terrace above the river — choose the Dow's tasting (LBV, a vintage, a 30-year tawny) or the Specialist flight. Book online.

Evening at the quinta

Pool, terrace, sunset over the vines.

Day 3 — Vinho Verde → Porto

Harvest in a traditional high-trained Vinho Verde vineyard

West out of the valley, one green detour, then the car goes back and the city begins.

Drive Pinhão → Quinta da Lixa (~1 h 15 / 95 km)

Past Amarante into the Sousa valley of the Vinho Verde region.

Quinta da Lixa — tour and tasting (Felgueiras)

The Meireles family estate, home of the Monverde Wine Experience Hotel. Crisp, low-alcohol Vinho Verde — the sharpest possible contrast with yesterday's ports. Book lunch at Monverde if you want to linger.

Drive to Porto (~50 min) · return the rental car · check in

Drop the car at a city office or the airport (metro E reaches the centre in ~30 min). A hotel around Aliados or Ribeira keeps the rest of the trip on foot.

Self-guided city walk (~2–3 h) & dinner

São Bento station's azulejos, the Sé cathedral, Livraria Lello and the Clérigos tower, down to the Ribeira waterfront. Dinner: a francesinha for the brave, or modern Portuguese with Douro wines.

Day 4 — Vila Nova de Gaia: the port lodges

The Dom Luís I bridge between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia

The original tour visits "two port houses" without naming them; these two pair a classic English shipper with the benchmark polished visit. Swap in Sandeman, Ferreira, Cálem or Cockburn's to taste.

Walk the Dom Luís I bridge (lower deck) to Gaia

The port-ageing side of the river since the 1700s — lodge roofs all the way up the hill.

Graham's 1890 Lodge — guided tour + tasting

Fifteen thousand casks and the vintage cellar, then a tasting flight — Port Essentials with food pairings is the sweet spot; the Vintage Room digs into the archive. Check in 10 minutes early.

Lunch — Mercado Beira-Rio, Gaia quay

Market stalls and petiscos; a white port and tonic is the local aperitif.

Taylor's — museum circuit + tasting

Self-paced audio tour of the cellars of the archetypal port house (founded 1692), ending with Chip Dry white, LBV and a 10-year tawny (~€25).

Sunset at Jardim do Morro · farewell dinner in Porto

The classic view back over the river and the old town, then recross the bridge for dinner.

Day 5 — Home

Breakfast, checkout, metro E or taxi to the airport (~25 min)

Midday flight out; connect back to Ljubljana by evening.
